Project Goals: The project’s goal is to develop a national approach for an effective protected areas management, included in NATURA 2000.
Specific goals:

  • Distribution of project’s experience aiming at its future utilization at other locations in Bulgaria and Romania.
  • Update of Russenski Lom NP Management Plan.
  • Elaboration of an Integrated Management Plan for BG 0000608 Lomovete Protected Areas aiming at preserving the habitats of both wild flora and fauna and BG 0002025 Lomovete – protection of wild birds.
  • Suggestion for a Common Management Plan for the territories among Lomovete and Komana Protected Areas and the Nature Parks.

Strategic Program for Sustainable Forest Management

Date: 27.03.2012 – Two (2) months.

In the operational area of the project the forests are main recourse. Same time the lack of business connections and information is appearing to be the main difficulty for development of sustainable management of the forests and stable socio-economic situation of the region. The specific project objectives related to this contract is to develop a common strategic program for forest sustainable management in the region and to promote new development of possibilities using forest resources in order to comply with the new specification required by the international wood market.

Overall objective:

  • To introduce the idea of cooperation as a fundamental point in the economic development process (local authorities, business companies and citizens) and in the natural resources preservation process.
  • To develop a common strategic program for forests sustainable management
  • To create a communication network and a quick answer in case of natural disasters
  • To increase enterprises and citizens sensibilization towards sustainable development and nature’s preservation
  • To increase local population’s wellbeing by decreasing unemployment through the creation of new job places, the promotion of new development possibilities using forests resources in a certified chain of custody, in order to comply with new specifications required by the international wood market.

Planned results:

  • 10-year strategic program for sustainable forest management in accordance with the aims and objectives of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of Forestry Sector in Bulgaria, 2006-2015 and Action Plan of the European Forestry Commission (EU Forest Action Plan) since 2006.
  • Mid-term Action Plan;
  • Provided public information, consultations (seminars, workshops) and operational mechanism for engaging the public about the program;
  • Communication strategy to raise awareness in the project area and their surroundings;


Belasitsa Nature Park

The focus of this project is to prepare a 10-year Management Plan for Belasitsa Nature Park, located in the most South-West part of Bulgaria, encompassing the North slopes of Belasitsa Mountain. Park’s territory borders to the West with the Republic of Macedonia (FYR) and to the South with the Republic of Greece.

Project Goals: In compliance with the best international practices and requirements of the European and local legislations this Plan has to set the vision for land usage, nature protection and ecologically sustainable socio-economic development, shared by the main stakeholders within the framework of the protected territory as well as of ones in the adjacent territories.
Specific goals:
preparation of 10-year Management Plan for Belasitsa NP and a framework for Management Plan’s adaptation process in compliance with changes in the general conditions (for example legislation, climate changes, biological tendencies);
Development and application of some Action Programmes supporting the Park’s and its adjacent territories management process.

Expected Results:

  • Data base generation for the purposes of Park’s management as a result of the on-site studies within the framework of the development of the MP.
  • Suggestions for local level common management of Belasitsa NP’s Management Plan (for example: by means of establishment of an informal management structure, etc.)
  • Adaptation measures and softening of climate changes within the borders of the park and its adjacent territories, covering forest management, sustainable utilization and management of nature resources, etc.
  • Detailed long-term monitoring programme for preservation and sustaining of the biodiversity in Belasistsa NP.
  • Institutional Development Programme for Belasitsa NP Directorate and staff trainings.
  • Tourist Infrastructure Development Programme for the needs of the pedestrian and orientation (познавателен) tourism in Belasitsa NP.
  • Public Relations and Nature Protection Educations for Belasitsa NP Programme.
  • Unforeseen situations and visitors’ security action plan.

Rusenski Lom Nature Park

Duration: 27 March 2013  – November2014

The project aims at reviewing the status of extremely rare species (some exception constitutes the Spermophilus citellus  европейския лалугер), where determining the existence for some of them is quite problematic. During the on-site studiesan array of methods will be used aiming at gathering maximum detailed and trustworthy information. It has to be indicated that for Rusenski Lom NP the existence of Sicista subtilis  andMyomimus roachi has not been confirmed, whereas the existence of the latter has not been ascertained to the North of Stara Planina mountain.

The entire territory of Rusenski Lom NP will be studied (3408 ha). To the extent that there is a possibility of a direct dependence of species’ status within the borders of the Park by its status outside the Park’s borders. The habitats of the described species will be described in detail (territory, borders, location, physic-geographic characteristics), and apart from this the level and nature of anthropogenic influence will be determined.

Pirin National Park and Tisata reserve

The OPE funded Organization and Sustainable Manangement of Pirin National Park and Tisata reserve project commenced on November 7th, 2012 and will be implemented in the next 29 months.

During the implementation of the service the aim will be to achieve many of the measures envisaged in the park’s management plan, to implement habitat and species preservation and regeneration measures for Pirin National Park and Tisata reserve and as whole to facilitate the preservation of protected areas, to renew the existent infrastructure in accordance with the European standards and legislation.

Project Goals:

In its context the implementation of the service aims at ensuring expert and logistics support to the Pirin National Park Directorate during the administrative, technical and financial management process, for an optimum and effective EU fund accumulation as well as the successful implementation of the project activities. Strengthening of the Pirin National Park Directorate’s institutional capacity is expected to be achieved through daily assistance for improvement of the administrative activities during public procurement procedures.
